5 ways to stay safe on the road this winter
Ruth Goodwin
The roads can be totally unpredictable at this time of the year. Here are our top 5 tips to prepare you for anything:
1. Drive slower
Decrease your speed and leave a larger distance between yourself and the cars in front of you so you don't suddenly find yourself hitting the brakes.
2. Snow tires
While they don't allow you to drive the same as you would in regular conditions, they do provide superior braking and better traction than an all-season tire.
3. Don't drive fatigued or under the influence
Make sure you're in good condition to drive. If you're fatigued, or if you've had some spiked egg nog at the holiday party, put the keys away and take a cab.
4. Keep a safety kit in your trunk
Keep a kit full of all the essentials, including: a blanket, flashlight, small shovel, booster cables, first aid kit, a reflective piece of clothing etc. You can purchase an affordable kit at your favourite department store.
5. Keep all of your fluids topped up
Make sure you have plenty of gas, at all times, as well as, oil, anti-freeze, and windshield washer fluid. Ensure that you take your car for regular maintenance twice a year.
